Wanna squabble about protein skimmers for a 20 gal reef?

About 20 years ago I set up a 55 gal reef and it didn’t do well. I then returned to FO salt tanks. Several months ago I set up a 20 gal reef and it’s doing great, with the exception of a few minor problems, and the loss of a zoa.

I religiously do two 15% water changes weekly to keep my nitrates down. A month ago I added a protein skimmer, and I’m thinking about removing it. I still need a 15% water change twice weekly. Other experienced reefers tell me that with a 20 gal reef, water changes are plenty good enough (especially 30% weekly) and that my skimmer is just an expensive replacement for a lava lamp – without the weird colors.

I would agree. I was doing just as well without it, I have noticed no difference with it, and with 30% water changes weekly, the depleted minerals and elements are being replaced. What other benefit could I gain by leaving it set up?
