Greetings, I hope this is the right spot for this question. Right now I am planning on making a 42 gallon Hex tank that I am "ressurecting" after a long period of disuse. I want to make it an invertebrate/sea horse tank. This is my second foray into reef aquarium keeping and my first to be quite blunt wasn’t too successful. I am hoping for a better second showing.

Right now I plan on using the following equipment on my tank:

1. RENA XP3 Cannister Filter
2. Aquarium Systems SeaClone 100 Protein Skimmer
3. Odyssea 24" 298W Metal Halide System
4. 2 Hydor Koralia Magnum 6
5. FluVal LCD Heater

My goal is to have mainly invertebrates in the tank. I was interested in the Mandarin Goby as well as Sea Horses as well. However my primary goal is to keep invertebrates. Is there anything else in my setup that I should be considering? Thank you in advance.

I have a 180g tank with a 100g sump tank. The present system has been up and running now for app. 3 years and generally doing well. However the water clarity in the tank could be a lot better. Throughout the tank are small particulates. This leads me to my question about sump tank care. Do you do any type of maintenance/cleaning of your sump tank, or leave it alone as long as tank #’s are fine and contents are growing and healthy? Filtration is socks and protein skimmer.

The filtration is in a 75 gallon sump, a reef octopus protein skimmer a, activated carbon and a refugium. As for the lighting i have two 150 watt metal haliade bulbs. Now my question is, is my tank done cycling, and i also want to kno about how many fish can i put in there, like for a predator tank or a community tank???

I am thinking of getting back into a SW/Reef tank. I had one years ago, but sold it when I moved to a new house and never got back into it.

Anyway… here is my question. I have a 75 gallon glass aquarium that I ‘acquired’ from my son when he got out of his turtle obsession. It has been cleaned and sitting empty for many months. I have thought about selling it, but it is a really nice looking tank and stand, so then I considered getting back into the hobby. But the problem is that the stand is open in the middle with a couple of shelves and only enclosed on each end. That makes it impossible to have a sump unless I change stands.

It has been 10 years since I had my last tank and I am in a different place financially, so if I do this, I want to spend the money to do it right. So, my gut is telling me that going with a HOT skimmer wouldn’t be ‘doing it right’. So…if I have to change the stand, I am thinking that I should just sell the whole thing and start with a bigger tank.

Thoughts?

My anemone died in my tank and by the time i got home only the base of the anemone was left knowing that when an anemone dies it releases toxins i reset the tank by cleaning it and making all new fresh saltwater and new live sand. I also cleand the filter, the skimmer, and the powerhead. The only thing that survived the disaster was my maroon clownfish and a couple of hermit crabs, my question is can I put my maroon and the hermits back in my freshly setup tank???

Hi Internet,

Im new to keeping saltwater fish have a juwel rio 180 set up with 3 live rocks from fiji which were about 8kg in total.

They have been in there a week now but are going brown now.

The Ammonia and Nitrate are 0 and ph 8.2 @ 24/25c

Currently there is two cleaning shrimp which have also been in there a week with the live rock and are thriving shedding skin etc.

Question:

1. Is this browning of the live rock normal?

Hello all.. Great forum...

Hello all..
Great forum… Glad to be here. I have been doing tanks for many years.. Just moved into reefs a couple of years ago.

I have an acrylic 90 gal that I hate… Too many scratches… I just upgraded to a 120 gal glass 48x24x24 with two overflows… My plan is to transfer my current reef into this tank. SO my question is:

– I currently have T5′s and PC lighting.. I dont plan on upgrading lighting just yet as I do have enough wattage for the extra tank size BUT I would like to change it up soon to metal halides. I have not purchased the canopy yet so do I need a 12 inch canopy and will that work for my current lighting with this tank being so much deeper than my current 18in depth tank… I only want a 4-5in sand bed.

I was told with metal halides I needed a large, minimun 12 inch, canaopy.. I dont realy like that look

hi all, i had my 40g tall tank setup for about 3 months now, with a sea clear protein skimmer about 60lb of live rock(with some things growing on the I’m not sure of what they are) and 50lb of live sand. i also had 2x 24 t5s. at first i wanted a fwlr but after seeing all the beautiful corals and reef setups I had a change of heart. becuz i couldnt fit a sump under my 40g tall i decided to upgrade. Not so much on the gallons but more on the dimension. my question now is how do i move everything to my 65g 30g sump? and what can i keep as far as corals. i have 2x 175w metal hadlite 2x 65 artic blue CF aqua c ev120 protein skimmer. And what other equipments will I need to be the reef master I was born to be (lol).
Thank you all in advance
