Due to space limitations, and my desire for a variety of fish + sea creatures, i’ve decided to go with the following, unconventional setup.

*Steel Dual Display Tank – Can fit 2 aquariums of matched size (75′s or 90′s), one on the top, one on the bottom.
*skimmer
*media reactor w/ carbon
*assortment of 300-400 gph hydor’s and other powerheads/pumps.
*metal halides for the bottom tank
*Compact flourecents for the top tank

Both tanks will have 3" or so of live sand.
Top tank will have some large pieces of live rock.
Bottom tank will have quite a bit more live rock, and some beginner corals (kenya & taro trees, and some pulsing xenia).

The unconventional part of this setup is that I plan on using the bottom tank as a functional tank, with the top tank overflowing into the bottom.

The tricky part is as follows.
Im not able to drill the bottom tank, but I need a return pump.
I have experimented with some setups involving a external in-line pump with somewhat of a siphon setup, and they work great…….until you turn off the pump, which breaks the siphon, which kills the waterflow when the power goes back on, which would burn the motor up. Lol, I cant have this, because I dont want to imagine what would happen if the power flickerd at home when I was at work etc.
So my current plan is to put a small (2 or 3 gallon) aquarium inside the bottom tank, towards the back, and sit a return pump in there, with the small aquarium acting as a baffle. I can put live rock etc in front of it to hide it. Any ideas on what to place over the top of the smaller aquarium? I was thinking some kind of egg crate or rust-proof screen, but any suggestions would be welcome, as I want to keep livestock out of the return area.

Another tricky point is I do not want the bottom tank to flood if the pump stops, I plan on using a spray bar slightly above water level on the top tank to combat this. My thought is that if the power goes out and the return pump stops, there will be a minimum of back siphon into the bottom tank. I guess I could plumb a one-way/check valve on the return line also?

As far as livestock goes, I want a puffer, trigger and eel in the top tank.
In the bottom I want my scopas tang, foxface, flame angel, sally lightfoot, hermits, snails, cleaner shrimps etc.

Lol, so theres the plan.

Any thoughts, Ideas, suggestions etc?
And no, I cant get 2 seperate setups due to space limits.

Thanks!

My name is Allen I live in Oregon and right now have a 55gal Saltwater tank with 2 Clowns Diamond watchman gobby (I call him crazy) twin spot, and cleaner wrasse (I call him pest everyone hates him but he does a good job) and a Zebra Eel about 2′ he is awsome oh and a garden eel and assorted corals and crabs and snails. I been doing saltwater for 3 or so years think it is about time to get a bigger tank as my Zebra is growing fast now he stayed small for a while then WHAM spurt! I sure do not know everything about tanks at all and seem to learn new stuff all the time.

Asking $2000.

THE TANK IS 8 FEET LONG, 3 FEET WIDE AND 30 INCHES TALL WITH 2 LARGE OVERFLOWS (3.5 AND 2 INCH HOLES DRILLED INTO THE BOTTOM OF EACH), CUSTOM FOAM ROCK BACKGROUND (SILICONED ON SO IT CAN BE REMOVED IF YOU WANTED) WITH 2 KORALIA POWERHEAD ADAPTERS ON EACH SIDE OF THE TANK. THE FRONT WINDOW IS MADE OF STARPHIRE GLASS AND THE STAND IS MADE OF STEEL (JUST UNDER 3 FEET TALL). I PURCHASED THE TANK FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER THINKING IT WAS MUCH BIGGER SO I WANT TO SELL THIS TO BUY EQUIPMENT FOR A MUCH LARGER TANK. IT ALSO COMES WITH A STYROFOAM/PLYWOOD SHEET TO PUT BETWEEN THE TANK AND STAND, 120 GALLON SUMP, HAMMERHEAD PUMP, MAG 18 SUBMERSIBLE PUMP AND PLUMBING (missing the bottom plastic nut on one of the bulkheads). I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY SCRATCHES OR LEAKING AND HAVE LET IT SIT FULL FOR A COUPLE DAYS TO MAKE SURE. IF YOU WANT THIS SHIPPED, YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE THE ARRANGMENTS. IM IN GILBERT, AZ.

If I am using a Mag 9.5 to return water from my sump to my DT, should I keep the line at the same size as the pump’s outlet? A Mag 9.5 outlet is 3/4", but I will be using a 1500 glass-holes overflow which has a 1 1/2" supply line. Just curious to see if the need for 1 1/2" on the supply vs. 3/4" on the return is b/c the supply is ran by gravity and the return is pumped? Thanks for your help…

I am setting up a 65 gallon tank.

I am considering a overflow box rated at 800 or 1200 gph (CS100 or CS102). The pump is rated at 800 gph or 1130 gph based on the 4′ rise (Mag 9.5 or Mag 12).

Should the pump match the overflow box rating or should the overflow box be rated higher than your pump?

Should you try to move as much water as possible? Should I go with 1200 gph or even higher, or is 800 gph ok for a 65 gallon tank?

Thanks in advance for any advise given.

I have a 75 gallon tank with 30 gallon sump under the main tank. The system has been running fine for 18 months or so. The main tank drains via an overflow in the corner and gravity feeds into the sump where the return pump feeds the water back to the main tank. While doing some routine maintenance, I noticed the water level in the main tank creeping up. I assumed something was partially blocking the overflow drain. I shut down the pump, disconnected the drain and blew through the line. There was no blockage in the drain. There also is no blockage from the main display through the grate into the overflow sump. There is a small tube sticking out of the top of the over flow drain, which I assume is intended to allow air into the drain. That tube is not blocked. Nonetheless, the drain still cannot keep up with the pump.
It must be something to do with the drain, but it’s a gravity system, so what could it be? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Right now I have the intake flow restricted with a temporary clamp to maintain an equilibrium between intake and drainage.
Thanks.
