I am having problems with my octopus skimmer. I am not sure the correct terms in explaining the parts but I will try my best…

I’ve been trying to play with it the past two days and the same outcome happens to no avail.

When I turn it on it sucks water up so fast that if I don’t unplug it in a few seconds it will over flow. Its a hang off the back skimmer if that helps. The little box that gets filled on the left does not make bubbles and does not have a chance to fill with water before the right side over flows.

Please help.

Oh one more thing… it was not turning on so I had to take it apart and clean it. I put it all back together the way I found it though. Maybe I did something wrong? :surprised:

I am in the early stages of setting up a 90 gal reef tank. Because the tank is going to be viewed from all four sides I am trying to keep the back free of clutter. I have had the back of the tank drilled near the bottom with 2 one and one half inch bulkheads. I have PVC running from both of those into one down pipe which runs into the sump. The pvc tubes inside the tank are 1 1/4 clear durso standpipe design.

The problem that I am running into is noise in the inch and a half pipe that runs into the sump. I have found that if I cover holes in the top of the standpipes the noise is gone, but when doing this I also don’t recover overflow movement in my standpipe after a simulated power outage (upon return of power).

So it seems that if I want flow to return incase of a power outage I have to sacrifice noise level, any suggestions on how I can have both??

Open to any suggestions!

Alright so here's the whole story...

Alright so here’s the whole story…

i bought a 24g nano for about 50 bucks from a pet store cuz they werent using it anymore, they had never used it at all actually, when they got it it was shipped to them with a broken light piece… so it just sat there and i asked em if they were doing anything with it and he said i could buy it, came with everything except the lighting..

so me thrilled new into the hobby was excited about this, looked around for a light setup, and found a local guy out of the burbs of chicago who had great reviews on his D.I.Y. L.E.D. setups… so i figure id give LED a shot so i bought my light system from here http://www.reefledlights.com/

i chose to do it with a setup of 18 LeD’s … 12 blue 8 white
now i am thinking these L.E.D.’s are WAY to powerful for my little 24g nano .. (this is my beginning assumption i just wanna know if im right)

i got these sitting about 6” above the tank as you’ll see in the pictures
the guy told me i dont remember exactly but i beleive he said they were some were equivalant to 300 watt lighting system…
hence why i raised it above the tank

Now here’s the story of the tank
first i put some liverock in there, and live sand, and a extra pump for extra flow …
let the take circulate a couple days water cleared up, bought a Coral Beauty for the tank, it was doing really well …

couple weeks past, moved some coral pieces in… just little things, Polyps, Mushrooms…. some hard corals.. (which didnt survive they either were bleached white… or killed off) then my coral beauty got Ich … then id say maybe 2 weeks ago i started getting the Red Slime everywere…. and the coral beauty died
so went to Petland the guy suggested me this "Chemiclean" its a Cyano bacterial remover… literally, worked wonders, the next morning woke up, red slime was gone…
BUT 2 days later, it seemed like where the red slime was previously it replaced with like a brown algae.. not really a slime but algae thats just growing everywere, uncontrollably, on corals…rocks, sand… eveyrthing…

SO thats my issue…
is it my lighting? is it something else?

here’s pictuers of my tank as it stands right now

http://s1113.photobucket.com/albums/k507/Reef1589/

If that doesnt work let me know please…

and if anyone needs me to re-clarify anything just ask me, i typed alot and think i jumped around to much…. =/ but ya, if u understand and know anything let me know
any feed back is fine

ALSO… all my Nutritions and pH levels are good… my Water temp at set at 78-80 as well

Hello, this being my first post I would like to say Hello to you all. I have been reading these forums months before my first post and I finally registered. I have a 90 gallon fowlr with a 25 gallon sump. this tank has been up for almost a year now. however when I started my tank I did not have all the proper test kits that I do now. I seeded my sump with some LS from a friends tank and 30lbs of cured LR. I used the argomax sand which is around 2-3 inches deep. I had this setup 1 month before I ever added a fish. I added 1 damsel after 1 month to help cycle tank.. I now have 2 damsels and 1 clown.. Since I was such a newb I did not know to test my tank 2 see if it cycled. from everything I have read surely it has cycled, cause my tank went through several visual changes.. especially algae outbreaks with what I assume is diatoms. I got on a regular schedule(every 3 weeks) of changing my water with RO water and oceanic salt mix.I also had a small cleaner crew( 3 hermits,10 turbo’s). for 2 0r 3 months everything seemed ok, (although I could only test PH,Ammonia, and salinity)…I even had a little coraline growing on 3 of my rocks. Recently I had a bad case of cyno and lost a few turbo’s and 1 hermit, the fish remained OK. I treated the cyno with red algae removal product from my LFS. after 2 treatments and 2 water changes as per instructions, the cyno went away and my tank totally went brown on LR, sand and tank. I think my cyno was due to low salinity and no flow in tank. I had a hydro that looks to be wrong, since I now have a refracto..my salinity got down below .019..now I keep it at.025.. I also added 2 koralia 1050 wave makers. as of yesterday I have done 2 15% water changes this week already. I have never used tap water not even for top offs. I now test everything and I will post the readings as soon as I get home today since I forgot them here at work. I did start testing everything that I see you guys posting on the forums the day I started my cyno treatment. luckily I do have test results before I added treatment. also the test before each water change during treatment. I did however at time of cyno treatment remove all the LS in my sump (6inches) since I felt it was no longer needed.maybe this can give you guys a small glimpse of my tank until I can post my test readings. FYI!! this tank originally had a wet dry system built into the back of the tank. I drilled it and changed it 2 a sump system. THANKS in advance..test readings will follow asap!!!

I have a 16 gal bowfront and my corals are doing fine but all my fish have been dieing sporadically. Ph-8.3 nitrite-0 ammonia-.15 ppm nitrate-15 ppm salinity-31 and specific gravity is 1.023. The nitrates are a little high bu I thought that would kill corals first. The ammonia is just a little high as well but it was higher and they were fine. Any answers?

I have had my marine tank for three months now. It took two months to cycle and was finally ready for fish 3 weeks ago. My Ammonia/nitrates/nitrites were all perfect. My salt levels are a little high but I am in the process of getting them down with water changes and my PH is good but what with all the water changes it will need buffing up a little bit. I got 10 clown fish in the tank last week and they seem to be doing very well. My levels were all fine yesterday so I went back to my lfs and got three tangs. A yellow tang, A purple tang (yellow tale) and a regal tang (the dory) my problem is that they have barley moved from underneath the live rock from the moment they were put into the tank. They aren’t really swimming just kind of moving around the same sort of area.

I have also seen that the yellow tang has two white spots on either side of it’s tale. I am aware this is probably ich! I now don’t know what to do. I can’t inspect the other tangs because they barley come out of hiding for me to get a proper look. The guy at my local lfs told me to use garlic to help cure it. The fact that he mentioned it last night and now I’ve seen it leads me to believe that perhaps he spotted it before I got them in the tank. Anyway if anyone has any advise as to what I can do please help.

Hi all!
We have a saltwater tank that is running along very smoothly in my classroom. We have a chocolate chip starfish, 2 damsels, 2 black clownfish, 2 snails, 1 hermit crab, 1 pipe fish, and almost a dozen seahorses.
Today, an angry/frustrated student walked in and poured his Arizona Iced Tea into the tank. The fish seem okay, though the seahorses are really hiding (I hope!). The ammonia level in 0.25 ppm, but the pH is 8.6-8.8 (probably unrelated). We are about to leave for the weekend, so is there anything I should do in the meantime or just wait to see what happens.

Thanks,
Ms. Le
