Alright so here's the whole story...

Alright so here’s the whole story…

i bought a 24g nano for about 50 bucks from a pet store cuz they werent using it anymore, they had never used it at all actually, when they got it it was shipped to them with a broken light piece… so it just sat there and i asked em if they were doing anything with it and he said i could buy it, came with everything except the lighting..

so me thrilled new into the hobby was excited about this, looked around for a light setup, and found a local guy out of the burbs of chicago who had great reviews on his D.I.Y. L.E.D. setups… so i figure id give LED a shot so i bought my light system from here http://www.reefledlights.com/

i chose to do it with a setup of 18 LeD’s … 12 blue 8 white
now i am thinking these L.E.D.’s are WAY to powerful for my little 24g nano .. (this is my beginning assumption i just wanna know if im right)

i got these sitting about 6” above the tank as you’ll see in the pictures
the guy told me i dont remember exactly but i beleive he said they were some were equivalant to 300 watt lighting system…
hence why i raised it above the tank

Now here’s the story of the tank
first i put some liverock in there, and live sand, and a extra pump for extra flow …
let the take circulate a couple days water cleared up, bought a Coral Beauty for the tank, it was doing really well …

couple weeks past, moved some coral pieces in… just little things, Polyps, Mushrooms…. some hard corals.. (which didnt survive they either were bleached white… or killed off) then my coral beauty got Ich … then id say maybe 2 weeks ago i started getting the Red Slime everywere…. and the coral beauty died
so went to Petland the guy suggested me this "Chemiclean" its a Cyano bacterial remover… literally, worked wonders, the next morning woke up, red slime was gone…
BUT 2 days later, it seemed like where the red slime was previously it replaced with like a brown algae.. not really a slime but algae thats just growing everywere, uncontrollably, on corals…rocks, sand… eveyrthing…

SO thats my issue…
is it my lighting? is it something else?

here’s pictuers of my tank as it stands right now

http://s1113.photobucket.com/albums/k507/Reef1589/

If that doesnt work let me know please…

and if anyone needs me to re-clarify anything just ask me, i typed alot and think i jumped around to much…. =/ but ya, if u understand and know anything let me know
any feed back is fine

ALSO… all my Nutritions and pH levels are good… my Water temp at set at 78-80 as well

Continued here:

I bought a gorgeous torch coral today, and its been in the tank now about 4 hours and still not opened up. while in this state I see what looks like a clam stuck between 2 of the corals ‘heads’ or ‘stalks, or ‘polyps’ whatever you call them. I did not see this at the LFS because the coral was in full bloom and ginormous.

Not sure how to upload photos yet, but it doesn’t look like a coral kind of clam. Maybe I should not call it a clam. It’s a 2 part shell thingee that is closed and turned away from me so i can only see the spine. The little of the mouth I can see appears to have some hair sticking out of it. can someone message me their email addy and I’ll send you a photo?

not sure if its alive or dead or a parasite or what. and its fairly big, its probably 2 inches.

thanks

ps: my clowns seem to have a crush on the torch. so happy!

Newbie here. Read online that people hand feed their soft corals like polyps with mysis shrimp. I’ve even seen pictures of corals trying to swallow a small hermit crab and trying to eat a fish that died and fell on it.

LFS says only feed the corals the filter foods and they’re good with photosynthesis (sp?) but online many people say feeding them brine shrimp or mysis shrimp, even blood worms makes the coral grow bigger and faster.

What is your take, do you hand feed your soft corals? Pros? Cons?

Thank you

Hey i have a 75 sps reef and everything is doing amazing! but i have a question about one of my sps, it is beginning to have white tips. It is still opening up and it still has its color, just the very tips of the coral are white. Does this mean new growth or is it dying?

Back round: We had a major algae issue in our tank (due to a number of reasons, but mostly a broken skimmer and no time and money to replace it). The skimmer has now been replaced and is working well. The algae issue still remained. So on the advice of local saltwater store, we removed all the rock and sand, scrubbed the rock and replaced all items in the tank (only but about 1/2 th sand back as we were told the sand bed was way to deep, there was about 4" total, but the goby moves it all over).

Issue: the issue is this morning i woke up and the meat coral (or so we think it is) seems to have air bulbs trapped in the coral (the water level in the sump was fine so im not even sure where all the air came from). We are unsure what to do at this point, one of the reason for spending all day scrubbing was to try and make things better in hopes that the coral will flurish and we can move items from this tank to the new tank once it is setup.

Question: Have i doomed my beloved Coral (we have had it for many years and it has survied many a newbie mistake and even a major move and always done well. I would feel horible if the action ment to help it is what kills it). Is there anything i can do other than wait and see?

Thank you for your time
