OK, I messed up and the answer is wait and see but wanted some thoughts because I hate waiting. I hadnt tested my water for two months. I have a fairly heavly load hard coral tank (not crazy load like some picutres but working on it). Frogspwan with 50 heads, glaxia, acros etc. Anyway I had my system in balance and was adding the same amount of two part (home made) dosage to keep my alk and calcium up. As I said, I hadnt tested my water in two months and then noticed some white tips on one coral and then within a couple of days the whole thing died. This was about a 8 inch hard coral Then I saw some other white tips on some acros. I tested my water and my alk was great but my calcium had gone down to 330!!! I dosed the heck out of the tank over the next 24 hours. Calcium now up to 450 and watching it closely. The hard corals are looking a littlle dead on the ends, but the body is good. What is the chance of recovering?

Hi, just some info… i have a 75 gallon tank 20g sump, octopus skimmer 90 or so lbs of fiji live rock and no corals. I have a feather duster multiple snails and crabs, a clown fish and a money plant (Halimeda? if that’s how you spell it). I do weekly water changes using natural sea water, with calcium of 340 ppm. I have been adding liquid calcium (kent) and i cant seem to get the calcium up over 360ppm. I have two different brands of test kits to back this up. Please tell me what i am doing wrong!

Hi,

so i got a new calcium reactor (woo hooo), i know its only a coralife 250 gal calcium reactor – but for now it will help me to get started. so i’m here again looking for your opinion/help/ideas that will help me setup my calcium reactor.

so far i have the following:

- argonite
-coralife calcium reactor 250 gal
-apex controller (i highly recommend this baby over RKE from DA – if you have questions why.. just ask me i can give you a list) – that will help me controll ph.
-20lbs co2 tank
-regulator with solenoid.

-here’s some questions:
- what else am i missing?
- should i place the ph probe : inside the tank? or within the reactor? or in my sump?

please be aware that i’m still new at this so please make the comments – plain english..

thanks for your comments/help/ideas -

Overview The carbonate-bearing component of a two-part method for dosing calcium and carbonates (the substances largely responsible for increasing alkalinity (buffering capacity)) in the same ratio as that found in natural seawater. Ionically-balanced with respect to natural seawater concentrations of calcium and carbonates when used in equal amounts with Reef Code A. Benefits reef-building organisms such as corals, clams, calcareous algae, etc. Simplifies calcium and alkalinity maintenance. Stronger than most competing products. Contains no phosphate, silicate, or organic material. Formulated by a marine scientist.Technical BackgroundThis method of calcium and carbonate supplementation is advantageous to hobbyists interested in a simple and effective solution to providing the very elements and molecules required for growth of reef-building organisms such as corals, clams, and their allies. Corals and other reef-building organisms require adequate and stable (more…)
