Sump Question

ok how should i have my sump setup? i would like to have a fuge in one compartment but which one? (far left where water goes into sump, middle, or far right with the return) also which compartment should i put the skimmer in.. and should i have any kind of substrate in the sump or just leave the bottom bare? any info on sumps would be great because i dont know squat about them.. lol
