Pico tank and filtrationless water movement

I’m relatively new to this forum and I’ve been reading threads here like crazy. Some really great info out there. I used to keep SW tanks decades ago, well before live rock and live sand were well understood. EVERYTHING was mechanical and your bacterial culture was understood to live in your mechanical filtration system.

For Fathers Day I received a 3 gallon tank and a gift certificate to a LFS to start stocking it up. I bought live rock, live sand, and got some of his water to start up my system. I’ve slooooooly added livestock.

I have a very clear and very healthy system. Plenty of coralline growth, no algae spikes, no nitrites/nitrates, etc.

I only have the HOB that came with the unit and other than running the little filterpack initially, I’ve taken it out over the past week and everything still looks great. I’ve read over and over that the floss is more trouble than it’s worth.

To me, the idea of keeping particles suspended and eventually picked up by the polyps, eaten and further reduced by other denizens, etc is better than eliminating the particles and having to bump up feeding.

Thoughts?
