Not if, but when the reefs die

Matt Pederson came and gave a presentation to our reef club this past weekend. If you don’t know Matt he considers himself a "professional hobbyist" who likes to breed fish. It’s amazing that he does this with under 100 gallons of water in a few nano tanks. He is "famous" for being the first to breed a species of file fish.

Anyway, he made a statement about when the reefs die and at what point governments will start to shut down collectors. I had hoped that as the planet warms up reefs will migrate north but he explained that it took thousands of years for the reefs to form and that they won’t grow nearly as fast as they die. He encourages home breeders because for every one fish you put in the hands of a hobbyist you leave about five on the reef. I just placed my order for: The Complete Illustrated Breeder’s Guide to Marine Aquarium Fishes. I see Glenn is plugging away at breeding and hope to get started in the near future myself.

Think about Matt’s statement. In our life time collecting of ornamentals will end. Sad.
