Nitrate Problems

I have some issues….

I have a 90gal tank with a 55gal refuge.

I have high nitrates so naturaly we did some water changes to get it down.

We did three 20 gal water changes one on day one, skipped a day, did another on day 3 and another on day 4.

It is sitting at like 40-50ppm and after each water change it lowered it down to 20ppm but the next day it would be back up to 40ppm. At this point i decided to try come chemical nitrate remover and it did the same thing dropped it down to 20ppm then back up to 40ppm the next day…

I am wondering what I am doing wrong or any suggestions. We are about to do a 50 gallon water change and hope that helps…

Any suggestions?
