Interesting "Happening" with my Xenia – overnight!

I have a 5 stalk Xenia in my 20 gal tank that has been doing fine for 3 months – growing and looking great. My nitrates were appraching 15 – 20 ppm so I decided on a big 45% water change. After the WC my nitrates measured 2.5 ppm (Salifert).

The next morning my Xenia shriveled to a sickly blue weed. Pretty awful looking.

I know that I read somewhere that Xenias, and many soft corals, prefer a higher level of nitrates – even as high as 20 ppm. True or not?

I’ve been struggling to keep my nitrates down when maybe I shouldn’t be working so hard at it. I only have softies – leathers, fingers, shrooms and zoas.

I’d like some comments if any of you would jump in here. The only change I made was the huge WC, and overnight the Xenia appear to have contacted the swine flu.
