Hey,

I recently completed a long awaited project for my 40 gal breeder reef tank. I have just finished the SS hood and have some questions about lighting. I have a 250mh light currently on a garbage pendant and was wondering if I could run the lamp in some sort of a ventilated cool tube and enclose the top of the hood? The hood extends 7" from the top of the water and the tube would be mounded to another piece of SS enclosing the top about 75%. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Remodeling my dining room area floors and adjacent walls etc. And someone had turned the power off to my system and it remain off for weekend thru hot weekend. 15 years of collections and growth gone that quick. I was devastated and still in disbelief. I had friends of lfs I was supplied corals to on a reglar bases. But all gone by a simple oversight by someone who wasn’t thinking outside their work agenda. I myself had gotten used to my system being self maintaining and didn’t worry about it to much. But then suddenly realized my self induced comfort levels was sticking time bomb with no back up electrical plan. Basically no power no operating systems. Now I’m back to the drawing boards with a new tank only 3 months old now.

In the last week I have had these little white creatures pop up in my sump. There are about 2 dozen of them now. I have seen none in my display only in my sump. They are attached to the acrylic and to the particle sponges. They are about 1/4 inch long kinda fuzzy in appearence with a fluted opening on one end. Can’t get the photo to upload, once I get i figured out i’ll get it on

My dad ran this tank (55 gallon) since I was a Freshman in High School up till about 10 years ago. I assisted him with maintaining it and a 155 gallon tank, so I have some experience. It was a reef tank that he was able to keep afloat until he moved and everything died in it when he moved. I’m now 30 and he is giving it to me.

That said, I’ve done a leak test on the tank for a 24 hour period and I have no leaks. I’m also assuming to wash the tank out with nothing but water?

He also had a light that he stated was used to assist is growth, the cable looks like it got munched on by some rats or got damaged in the move… plus the plug looks like it has about 10 years of corrosion on it. I plan on replacing the plug/wire and testing later today.

Which leaves the filter system. He told me that the air pump that powers the entire filter was missing, so I need to find a new one. I also noticed that the airstones being used are old and so is the carbon filter. Also noticed the rubber tubing has gone brittle with age.

Now that you have an idea of the age of this thing, I just need some pointers to avoid issues with using aged equipment. Any other gotcha’s I am missing? What about using a UPS to keep things moving during power outtages?

I have a little Pico SW tank that’s been going about two months. I have two live rocks in there, one was purple with coralline algae and the other wasn’t when I bought them.

The tank has nice coralline growth. Plenty of it on the tank walls, in the filter, on shells, etc. However, the other rock hasn’t had any noticeable or detectable growth of coralline algae. I’m not really too concerned, but I am curious as to why that would be.

I don’t know the origination of the rock, but it is natural rock, whitish in color, looking like other reef coral rock I’ve seen.

Any other inanimate objects I put in have coralline algae growing on it in a few days. I’d appreciate your insight.

Just broke down my breeder system and I was really depressed so I broke down one of my sumps and cleaned it up… already had it drilled for sump useage so all I had to do was slap on an overflow box and transfer sand and rock from my other systems… I didnt realise how much I had until I brought the rock to the store to trade in for credit.
I had over 700 lbs of rock and I have no clue how much sand (4-6 inch sandbed with great amounts of baserock for jawfish in a 150 gal tank… you do the math. It hurts my head) I still have more rock than any one 55 gal should EVER have but I wanted to make sure I had what I needed. I traded just around 60 lbs of the rock for credit to get fish in the tank and the rest went on craigslist… there are some very happy people out there right now… I dont think I realized just how many copepodes can fit in one rock! THey went crazy in my tanks and I didnt even know it until I broke down the systems.
Now my brand spanking new 55 gal reef (if you can call it that) has been born! All I have are the corals I hadnt sold yet (5 of them) 2 clowns, pistel shrimp, yellow watchman, canary blenny, bicolor, and the cleaner crew I transfered from my system (hermits, aerowcrab, one very large mithrax crab that scared the shit out of my husband when he lifted a rock and he was suddenly nose to nose with him and one coral banded shrimp,) The setup isnt as beautiful as my old 125 gal and not nearly as intreaging as my breeder system, but I need cheering up so I will be posting pictures of it and taking suggestions on additions to my family. This is strictly peaceful setup. Reef with blennys and gobys, but I hope to have it running like my other systems soon. (cant find the pump I had on my protein skimmer so my hopes may get dashed if I dont kind it soon!!!)
