Dipping rock in fresh water

hmm isnt this supposed to kill anything on the rock? i had to scrub a few rocks yesterday because they were getting really nasty and i dont have $$ for a clean up crew atm. there were a few polyps on the rock i put in fresh water and scrubbed…. i figured they would die immediatly but they are all back open and seem to be happy in my tank…. does this mean it did not kill the algae either??
