Caribbean/Florida Key Biotope Reef

I’m getting excited, l just about have all the parts to begin to put together my tank. I have a 46 bow and will be adding a refugium which is the last piece of equipment I waiting on. Hopefully it will be ready this week and I can put the tank together this weekend.

I had someone local build the refugium. My stand has a 11 and 1/8 inch width so I was unable to use a standard tank since their widths are 12 inches. The refugium is 24×10.5×17. The protein skimmer (ASM G-1X) and lighting (Orbit QHI/T5) is here. My order from Drs Foster and Smith came yesterday containing a mag drive pump 700, two koralia pumps, vinyl tubing and a U-tube for the return. I know some of you will recommend the rigid plumping but I like the flexibility of the vinyl tubing. I did need some plumping parts to attach the tubing to the mag pump and U-tube.

Since I’m a florida native I want to do a caribbean/florida key biotope reef. I have identified a couple of florida based companies who have the aquarcultured live rock. I’m considering starting with 30 lbs of the base rock and 20 lbs of the premium rock to cycle the tank.

Later I hope to order smaller quanities of live rock hopefully with some small corals and without cycling the tank to fill in where needed. I also have my eye on gorgonians, recordea, caribbean zoos and a few fish later. Can hardly wait.
