adding chaeto to a tank?

I see where alot of people have chaeto algae in the fuge or in the back of a tank somewhere. i dont have a fuge and i dont have the ability to put any lights in the back of my tank for chaeto. can i add it directly to my display tank somewhere to help control nitrates?? if so where ???
