Added filtration for my Red Sea Max System?

All of my filtration is built into the back of my tank. there is the overflow intake, then a foam filter to seperate out large debris, then a large skimmer system, then there is a 3" square 10" long space that is supposed to house a heater (which i dont need) then bio media and carbon media, then the return.

my question is since i am not using the space designed for the heater could i do anything for added filtration here?? fill it full of live rock or some kind of algae for filtration??? i dont know what i would need to do to accomplish this, or if it would slow down water to much for the powerhead return. it just seems like wasted space

thanks
steve
